‘Ya Albi’ is a project that I got to work on in the spring of 2016, that will always stick with me. It’s one of the few productions that really I feel made me more aware as a person of an issue that is such an important topic both in our country, and in the world. Predominantly I’ve worked mainly in thrillers/horrors, romances, and comedies where social issues of the time tend not to be a huge part of the narrative.
When reading the script that director Christine Chen sent me, I was on board right away having worked with her numerous times, and having very much enjoyed working on the short ‘A Birds Nest’ that we had previously also shot in Shreveport. But I will admit, I only knew a small bit about the refugee crisis in Syria and was very naive about it all.
Through the course of researching during preproduction, seeing the characters beautifully materialized by our talented actors, and suddenly listening more when the topic was talked of on the news, I suddenly felt myself becoming so much more aware and sympathetic to what was happening. And that is the power of film, and why films like this matter. Because they make you connect to things happening on the other side of the world, to people that you have never met, but suddenly you are able to on a human level empathize that these are people. People who just want to live a life, and have their children live a life without fear.
I like to think that we live in a world that more and more people are opening their hearts and minds to what is happening. And then someone will leave a comment comparing these people to snakes, saying that ‘they want to kill us all, kill our children, destroy our way of life.’
And once again, I’m reminded why this story matters. That we still have so far to come with this, and that there are still people who have such hatred towards people trying to escape a country where their lives are threatened.
With everything that has happened in the past year, this little film that I had the honor of doing makeup on has been trucking along, going to scores of festivals, winning award after award, and being seen now by countless people. It warms my soul to know that it has hopefully broadened some many people’s minds. ‘Ya Albi’ has been doing so well, that it is now Oscar Qualified. So now along with wanting this story to be spread for telling the story, we have a little extra motivation to get it out there! And the best was for that to happen is to get as many people to know about the film. Below you will find the trailer, all I ask is that you watch it, comment on, share it with others, if there’s a screening near you go watch it and bring a friend (for updates on screenings check out the Facebook page).

Shakespeare on the Range Trailer

October 7th, 2017

To be sentimental or not to be sentimental, that is the question. Well at least me me it typically is. So let’s do a little bit of both!

When I was newly out of college I had the notion that I wanted to do makeup for the film industry, but really had no clue had to get started. I was fortunate enough that a friend of a friend was working on their first feature and with no set experience at all they brought me on. That film maker was Christine Chen. Over the years we’ve been very fortunate to work with each other again and again. Multiple times I’ve gone with her and the Moth to Flame production family to Shreveport to make short films for the Louisiana Film Prize Competition. All have been adventures in many ways, and as a team we’ve been able to grow, expand our skill sets, and do things that we just wanted to give a try.

This year marked the 3rd time that I had the opportunity to work on a film for the LA Film Prize. I once again got to work with Moth to Flame Films for the short ‘Shakespeare on the Range’, and man oh man was it a fun filled one for me! Being set at a prison we got to do a lot of work with fake tattoos, we had fights, we had flash backs to the crimes that brought our characters to their current predicaments, and got to do some fun blood gags as well. This short gave me the opportunity to do so much work that I enjoy and the chance to experiment with a few techniques I had been eager to do.

The festival is now in full swing this weekend, however, I sadly will not be in attendance for the first time. Monday I start a new film in Los Angeles that I had to prioritize prepping for instead. Won’t lie it breaks my heart to do so. I love seeing all the films that made it, meeting the different filmmakers, having a chance to hang out with my film family, and just have a genuinely fun time. For those going I hope you have an amazing time and enjoy the work we did!

Here’s a trailer for the film, and you can see a couple of blood gags that I worked on in it as well.

Recently I spent two months in LA working. And sadly because of this I missed almost all of the Texas Wildflowers. So when I heard that California was suppose to have a spectacular wildflower season because of the increase of rain, I knew I couldn’t miss it! I called my best friend Shea Wolfe and we quickly planned a trip out to Antelope Valley to take advantage of the bright orange poppy flowers. When we got out there, the flowers were already starting to dwindle however they still provided the perfect pop of color and our photographer Collin Scouten had no problem capturing all the beauty of both Shea and the flowers!

It was a great day filled with beautiful nature, long drives with good friends, crazy winds, and singing Disney songs while drinking sparkling wine. Thank you Shea for being a beautiful model, amazing stylist, and a wonderful friend who goes along with my crazy ideas! And also of course to Colin for capturing such fantastic photographs, driving us out there, and for putting up with the goofiness that is ‘The Adventures of Roxy and Shea’.

About a month back, I had an amazing opportunity to assist Artist Alexandra French on a shoot. I was referred by a mutual friend, and went in having zero idea what it was and who it was for. Upon my arrival, I discovered it was a music video for some pretty big names.

So here is the lyric video for “Light My Body Up” David Guetta feat. Nicki Minaj & Lil Wayne.

Produced by Nick Ruff, Cailin Lowery, Carver Karaszewski
DP: Chris Ripley

The last post was my love letter to the academy awards as a whole. Now let me take a moment to talk about a couple of things in particular from this specific academy awards. First off let me say was absolutely STUNNING Janelle Monáe was. Every time the cameras showed her I was on cloud 9. She is a beautiful woman, but her makeup, hair, dress, everything was pure perfection. She blew me away with how perfect her look was. (Every photo I’ve seen of her with other celebs that evening my eye instantly is drawn to her). The gold eyes, glowing skin, and her eyebrows are what I think everyone should strive for with brows. They are defined to frame her face beautifully but that don’t over power and aren’t super dark.

The category that I am always most excited for, naturally is best makeup. And I have seen alot of back in forth online this year on if it should have gone to the Star Trek team over Suicide Squad. Both of these teams did fantastic work and both deserved to be recognized. Let’s start with that. I’m also of the opinion as with others that the Makeup and Hair design category really does need to be split up into at least 3 categories (makeup, prosthetic makeup, and hair). These things are all completely different where it seems unfair to declare one as being better then another when the skills needed are so different. The other part of this argument that is bothersome to me that so many people keep comparing images of the aliens from Star Trek to images of Harley Quinn (once again these are two totally different kinds of makeup and can’t really be compared). This saddens me because of the range of different characters that are being overlooked in Suicide Squad and all the work that went into the different looks. Makeup artist magazine had a article that talked about the makeups done for Suicide Squad, that I highly recommend reading. They talked about the work that went into Killer Croc, and it was an intense makeup design. After reading that I had a whole new appreciation for it. For me, either filming winning I was complexity okay with because both had work that was award winning and should be recognized.

And how can we talk about Academy Awards 2017 without mentioning the now infamous wrong envelope. I watched the entire show live, start to finish, no YouTube clips. I am still in shock that happened. One of the craziest live tv moments I can think of. Feel so bad about the mix up, and for all those involved. But wow was that not some good tv?

The academy awards holds such a special place in my heart. For almost as long as I can remember, I have always watched the award ceremony. When I was a little girl I would sit on the living room floor and watch all the festivities and dream of one day gracing the red carpet in a beautiful gown. My parents would then have to listen to me practice my acceptance speech, where I would thank anyone and everyone who came to my mind (I was a dramatic preteen). As I got older, I always held onto the magic that was the oscars and kept my dream of one day being there.

Flash forward to my 20’s. I was sitting at my local bar with my friends insisting on still watching the awards, I had been working on retail makeup for a number of years now, was in my final year of college as a film major, and in love with the idea of doing makeup for films (but wasn’t sure how to get started). As the award for best makeup was announced I instantly become terribly upset, because Hellboy II: The Golden Army hadn’t won and I was obsessed with the makeup designs from that film. I can’t even remember who won, I just remember that the Hellboy team hadn’t and it struck me to my core. So much so, that I declared to everyone at my table, that I was one day going to go to Academy Awards and I would win for Best Makeup. And with that statement I became driven and focused. I started to do everything I could to better myself as an artist and working on any production I could get on.

Now am I anywhere close to winning an academy award? Hell no. The talent that the nominees have is amazing, and sets standards of what I aim to one day be. So once again, just as a child I sat down on my living floor and watched the magic that is the academy awards.
